Albion are currently equal 4th in the record books for best "second" division team in history unbeaten from Match 1!
It goes Albion 18 unbeaten since start of a season
Sunderland 18 unbeaten in 1998 then lost their 19th
QPR 19 unbeaten in 2010 then lost their 20th
West Ham unbeaten in 21 in 1990 then lost their 22nd
Nothing else near in any season until way back in 1893-4 when Liverpool won the 2nd division by going unbeaten all season - 28 matches
That's stunning really isn't it in this age
By the way Wigan went 17 but lost their 18th in 2004
I'm sad I know but I like stats especially when they show us in such a good light

2nd longest unbeaten run in the championship sounds impressive but only until you realise it's been around for about 10 years! Maybe we can hit the magic 22! Proud of our boys regardless.

I don't want to get any hopes up, but all those teams were promoted.

Not in the slightest being negative....... it's incredible, we're top, looks like we should manage play-offs or better.

But since you're doing stats......... how many draws to wins did the other clubs have in those runs I wonder? And where did they finish in the league? Most get promotion I assume?

The holy grail would be 23- having played every team.

Disagree - if we get to 19 then we're equal top with QPR. Football records start when tiers are retitled. Can't have it both ways. Liverpool have never won the Premier. Chelsea never been outside it, Sheff Wed belong in it etc

The top is very close this year though, how close was it in those record years?

How the **** do you paste a table in here.... anyway, its a bit apples with oranges, but competition was not as fierce in any of those years

If we were Burnley / Hull / Derby or Boro we would be absolute shoe ins for the League title and promotion.

Quite strange not even our own supporters think we will do it. (although belief starting to be heard which is only a recent thing)

Bollox. No having it both ways about it. Football did not start when Sky invented it in the 1990s, nor did it change every time some numpty decided to re-name the divisions; it's been around as a professional game since the 19th. century. ALL records are valid.

As in the title of this thread don't people refer to records in tiers of English football?

i.e. old money Division 4, now Div 2, was Div 3 has always been the fourth tier of English football, hasn't it?

Only one where you can't make a direct comparison all the way through is from 1958, when the old divisions three north and south became division three and division four.

True, we did major in Div 3 (South) for some time!
