The 82,000 rise in overall net migration was fuelled by a rise of 62,000 in immigration to 636,000 and a fall of 30,000 in emigration, according to the latest quarterly figures for the 12 months to June.

The net migration figure is the highest on record for the second quarter running and is 10,000 higher than the previous recorded peak in 2005 shortly after the former Communist states of Poland, Czech Republic and others joined the European Union.

The latest figures confirm that Britain’s is firmly in an era of mass migration and the government’s hopes of reducing net migration to the “tens of thousands” is as far away as ever. The pledge to reduce net migration below 100,000 was renewed by David Cameron shortly after the election in May.
