England are happy to put their trust in Jake Forster-Caskey against Switzerland at the Amex.
But boss Gareth Southgate admits the Albion man’s chances of starting could hinge on the system the under-21s play tonight.
Forster-Caskey’s prospects of a major role in the Group 9 qualifier increased when Nathaniel Chalobah was booked in Thursday’s 0-0 draw in Bosnia. The Chelsea man, on loan to Napoli, is suspended tonight which could open the door for Forster-Caskey, who went on for the last few minutes in Sarajevo.
Southgate said: “It depends on the system we play. We went to a diamond, which worked pretty well, on Thursday so that has some effect on it.
“But he is a player we trust. He is a good professional who wants to improve and we like those types.”
Southgate has sent Forster-Caskey on towards the end of three of his side’s last four games.
He added: “Jake has been a really important member of our squad over the last couple of years.
“He had a long run of games in the back end of the last qualifying campaign and the friendlies leading into the finals. I think the experience has been good for him.
“He is a very mature footballer, he reads the game really well. He is a good technical footballer.
“At the moment it’s a little bit difficult for him with his opportunities at club level. The first team are doing so well and he understands he has got to be patient.

“It’s good that he got some games at Milton Keynes and he is very much in the frame for us although, at the moment, not starting.”Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton could face a battle to make the bench. Jordan Pickford, the Sunderland keeper currently on loan at Preston, looks a certain starter. Joe Wildsmith of Sheffield Wednesday was on the bench in Bosnia.
