Only 6 extras 1lb 5 byes.

Umpires don't call no balls anymore do they?

234 all out, who knows what a decent total is on this wicket?

Our middle order will have to bat a whole lot better than it has done so far, I shudder to think what we will make if Cook & Root fall cheaply.

More proof, if actually required, that Moeen is not an opening batsman.

Moving along quite well today, some one must have pointed out to Bell which end of the bat to hold.

I was thinking more 124-3 and a 1/2. Stokes could come in at 11 and try and keep an end going one handed. He has the character.

I see one of our own has made the BBC test match page.

Kevin Ticehurst: The injury to Stokes, could be the pivotal moment in this test match. Fearing the worst here...

With the way the pitch is turning already we need to at least get level first time, as we don't want to be chasing much 2nd innings.

Just 50 odd behind now with 6, albeit 5 with Stokes injury, wickets in hand, I'd hope so

Taylor proving why he should have been given a chance earlier. The question of who will stand up in the middle order if Root fails is going a long way to being answered today.

Might be good fun tomorrow if England get a reasonable lead and Patel/Rashid/Broad are given a chance to biff it about...

Wow, full marks to the boy Taylor for this knock - ably supported by Bairstow.

It is surprising that having lost Trott and Pietersen, and not having had a decent opening partner for Cook, Taylor hasn't featured at all at test level in the last 3 years. How the hell did that happen?

Simple answer is he cant be any good as he doesnt play for Surrey or Yorkshire so is ignored.

There may be an element of this, there was also rightly or wrongly worries about his height and his ability against pace. Regardless, he should have played all three in this series, he top scored in the warmup and is a fine player of spin.

Personally, I think he's underrated and if he gets a chance he'll do alright against the South African quicks.

There are more Notts players in the current squad than Yorkshire (and IIRC none from Surrey). Never let the truth get in the way of a good cliche though!
