Another one that needs answering: If you flew in a due easterly direction from the first tee at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club and kept at a constant height, the next time you would touch land would be in the Urals. Is this true, or a locally created "fact" that is actually complete poo?

Oh dear, someone's not from Sussex.
It was done by the saxons to confuse travellers from foreign parts.
Loads of places follow the same pattern; not necessarily the wrong way round but miles apart.
The Grinsteads, the Beedings, the Hoathleys, the Bournes, etc. Plus places like Lingfield and Lindfield.
