Jake Forster-Caskey has returned to Albion after the expiry of his one-month loan spell with Championship rivals MK Dons.
But the England under-21 international could go back to them eventually.
Forster-Caskey would have been barred from Dons' visit to the Amex on November 7 if his loan had been extended.
That is followed by an international break, so it was not viable for the Buckinghamshire club.
Dons manager Karl Robinson, speaking to oneMK, said: "He could only play two games in four weeks so we obviously have to think about that.
"He will go back for the forseeable future but he is certainly someone that we would like to have back. After the break we will look to re-visit it."
Robinson said last week he would love to sign Forster-Caskey permanently.
He is under contract until June 2017 and Albion have no plans to sell him.
Forster-Caskey is now in contention for a place in the matchday squad for Saturday's visit to Reading.
