Yep

I was suprised though, I always imagined a missile would explode on impact, rather than explode in close proximity. Is this automated or would it require someone to detonate it?

Same here. I always presumed a missile to be like a big bullet. I was surprised to see it explode away from the object it's aiming for.

That's how they work. Think Anti aircraft shells of WW2, they basically fill the air with shrapnel destroying fuel lines etc.
