Done a couple recently, all repositioning cruises (fantastic value), last one was Yokohama to Vancouver & the next one Barcelona to Recife (Brazil). We then add our own trips at the end (birding in Brazil for 5 days & some sight seeing). Japan to Canada was with Holland - America, very nice, extremely reasonable but as the alcohol was expensive we decided to be tea total (and enjoyed it!). The November trip to Brazil with Pulmantur includes all drinks, alcoholic or otherwise, visits the Canaries, Cap Verde, and the 12 day trip is cheaper than the return air fare. So a little tip, if you want value look for repositioning trips & the company we use is vacationstogo.com

I love a cruise. Started with Thomson then graduated to Royal Caribbean. Last cruise packed with Scots. Many Rangers fans and allegedly 40 people escorted off the ship by police, someone punched the captain, 4 people died (hopefully of natural causes). Actually we knew nothing of all this till the last morning and we had a wonderful time.

But what is a repositioning trip please?

Cruise companies move their ships between different areas for different seasons, such as from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, or South America. For example P&O have no ships in the Med during the winter. These are the repositioning trips. They tend to be longer, one-off, one way sailings carried out between sailing seasons, and if you are fortunate you can get great deals on these sailings.

Only ever been on one cruise but it was a beauty. 3 years ago eent on a silversea cruise from fort Lauderdale to various small islands like st barts in the Caribbean. It was heavenly , fabulous boat, service and food to die for. High ratio of staff to customers. Only downside was the price but worth every penny.

Did pretty much the same cruise, but with P&O for 14 nights from Southampton and included Skagen and Oslo. Was the first time for us - I’d always been sceptical about spending that long on a ship - but agree with everything you say. Felt like a series of great city breaks without having to travel/change hotels. Each city completely different and fascinating, but the comfort of returning a fantastic hotel room, great food and drink, loads of activities and good entertainment etc. The sea days were fine......plenty to do, everything from a decent spa and gym to a series of lectures. Liked the variety of formal and informal dining. It’s possible to basically eat 24 hours a day though so expect to put on some timber.........

Only thing I would say is for any length of time get the best cabin you can afford, it’ll make the trip much more enjoyable. We’ll be doing another before long - again as you say difficulty will be living up to the first one, and choosing where to go (Galápagos Islands or Alaska if I get my way [emoji16])

Our dream is the Galapagos but the price is outrageous and so not sure we can justify spending that much.

Just returned from a week in Alaska on Royal's Ovation of the Seas. Brilliant trip, great stops at Juneau, Skagway and Victoria in Canada. So much stuff for the kids to do on board, including my oldest son and I (him pictured) spending every possible minute on the Flowrider. Highlight was the helicopter ride to the top of the Mendanhall Glacier to go on a dog sled expedition. Only 97 days to our next one on Harmony of the Seas around the Caribbean.
