Strapline says it all: 'Chris Hughton has taken the seasiders to the top of the Championship with a blend of organised coaching and canny work in the transfer market'

NIce to read a piece from a journo who has taken the trouble to actually do some research.

Don't a lot of journos actually live in Brighton? Paul Hayward being one, wouldn't be surprised if there were loads more considering it's distance to London. Easier to he knowledgable on a team in the city you live

Agree with comments on this thread, this is a well-researched, generous account but hardly containing anything we didn't know already.

True, but then he's written it for a national paper, rather than a niche forum of obsessive Brighton fans.

Don't much like the last sentence!

I hadn't seen written confirmation that Oscar walked because of transfer policy before though. He was right to do so, it was a fecking disaster that season and last. Really pleased the boat has been steadied with some very sound transfers this season. As the article says the current situation may not last but the club is going in the right direction again now.

That's the same Jacob Steinberg, btw, who was pilloried on here a few weeks ago for an ignorant pre-season preview in which he forecast us to be in the bottom four on the grounds that Hughton would be relying on a half-fit Bobby Zamora. Oh yeah, now he looks at the league table and sees he was completely wrong he does some research ...

Many do (including Ian Winrow, Mike Donovan and a load of rugby and athletics writers - enough for a regular pub evening at a well-known Trafalgar Street hostelry), but he's not one of them.

I hope none of the horrifically significant number of Palace journos live round these parts.

If you mean football writers, I think Dominic Fifield in Redhill is closest. I did bump into the Mail's Dean Ashton at the Roedean cafe once, to my surprise, but he doesn't live here.

Mark Steel, who has to count as a journo as well as a standup after winning the columnist of the year award, and is a Palace fan, does. But as he helped lead the fight against academy staus for Hove Park School, we might forgive him. Especially as so many comedians are Palace fans (insert own punchline here).

Now that explains how a a club called palace struggled to get 12000 without fans being let in for free and on kids season tickets in the Championship are now the most passionate fans in the world. Funny how they were not so p[assionate for Cardiff at home in the Championship. As the press say, never let the truth get in the way of a good story, meanwhile at Brighton there will be a crowd bigger than Leeds for another lower league game.

Sure - I'm not passing any comment on his general output. In this particular piece, the general / background stuff is spot on. Mostly, present company excluded, when the Nationals write about any 'lower league' club, they always do it in context of any Premier League angles they can find. Is the manager ex Prem? Which ex Prem players are in their side? (Just like the earlier Steinberg piece you've referenced :jester: )

You're like a parody of yourself. What an utterly bizarre contribution to a thread about journalism.

Here's his piece from pre-season. Albion were "relegation contenders" along with Reading.
