Having been relegated the season before, Brighton found themselves still in Division Two because of the formation of the Premier League.
With the finishing of Steve Cotterill, Paul Moulden and Kurt Nogan, Seagulls supporters were not short of goals.
Yet despite winning four of their first six matches, Barry Lloyd’s side were not really strong enough for a promotion push and finishing ninth was respectable, especially with the financial turmoil hanging over the club. Even so, the Seagulls beat Bolton home and away. As for the Trotters, they beat FA Cup holders Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield and stormed to the runners-up spot in the Second Division.*

Bolton Wanderers1. Keith Branagan- Ever-present goalkeeper who had signed on a free transfer from Millwall in the summer. Not much to do throughout the game except pick the ball out of the net towards the end.
2. Phil Brown- Went on to become caretaker boss at Bolton in 1999. Famously guided Hull City to the Premier League in 2008.
3. David Burke- Left back in his second spell at the club. Had originally started his career at Bolton in 1977.
4. Dave Lee- Right-winger signed from Southampton in the previous month. Hit the bar in the second half with a header after a penetrating cross.
5. Mark Seagraves- Central defender, previously with Liverpool, but who made his name with Manchester City before being sold to Bolton in 1990.
6. Alan Stubbs- Went on to become club captain, leading Bolton to Wembley twice.
7. Scott Green- Supplied a superb diagonal cross for Scott Green to almost score in the first half.
8. Tony Kelly- A cult hero nicknamed ‘Zico’ by fans at Burnden Park.
9. Andy Walker- Grabbed 26 league goals in 1992/93. Famously scored at Anfield to help the Trotters knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Anfield.
10. John McGinlay- His header off Mark Patterson’s cross set up Lee for a great chance midway through the game.
11. Mark Patterson- Had a good chance just before half-time and smashed a humdinger of a shot into the net but it was disallowed for offside.
Sub: 12. David Reeves- Joined Notts County two months later in a £80,000 deal.

1. Mark Beeney- Sold to Leeds United in a £350,000 deal in April 1993 to save the club.
2. Gary Chivers- In his last full season with the Seagulls, making 43 league appearances.
3. Ian Chapman- Scored the winner against Bolton in a 2-1 success in August 1992.
4. Dean Wilkins- His decent long-range effort was easily saved in the first half.
5. Paul McCarthy- Solid, consistent performer with 30 league appearances in 1992/93.

11. Clive Walker- Vastly experienced and skillful winger who made 38 league appearances during the season.
