Brighton & Hove Albion women’s captain Jay Blackie stressed the need to be even more clinical in front of goal ahead of today’s match against C & K Basildon at Culver Road, kick-off 2pm.

The Seagulls may have scored 16 goals in six games across all competitions so far this season, but the skipper admitted that there is still room for improvement.

She told seagulls.co.uk, “We’re creating chances left, right and centre and the stats we’re getting back show that we’re penetrating the final third between 45 and 70 times a game.

“But we need to have more shots on target and complement the time we spend in the attacking third with more goals.
*
“We’ll just keep practising, but it’s just a confidence thing, we’ve got girls all across the pitch that know how to score.
*
“It’s about having that confidence to be composed when it comes to taking a chance and putting the ball in the net.
*
“As soon as Kate Natkiel and Kim Stenning get into their stride, they will be unstoppable, but it’s just about us all having that little bit more confidence.”

Blackie looked ahead to the potential threat posed by Basildon, who have been somewhat of a surprise package so far this campaign after impressive 1-0 wins over both Tottenham and Coventry and a 1-1 draw with Charlton.

“I’m expecting a really tough game; we know that they come into the game after having a really good start, but hopefully we can get the three points.

“They drew with Charlton in the first game of the season, they beat Tottenham and the fact they scored four goals against Cardiff means they’re really strong.

“They’re a really physical side, have some good goalscorers in the team and will turn the game into a battle.”

Albion go into Sunday’s game without conceding a goal in six matches so far this season and the skipper says the whole squad are eager to continue this defensive run for as long as possible.

“It’s something which has given us a lot of confidence, but it also puts pressure on us because we don’t want to concede that first goal.

“But we are very proud of that record and will put our bodies on the line to protect it.

“When a team comes to play a side that hasn’t lost or conceded, they have to think about ways that they’re going to be the first to do it.
