In 1979/80, Wolves were a mighty side; John Barnwell’s team finished in sixth position and won the League Cup in a 1-0 victory over mighty Nottingham Forest.
Yet First Division new boys Brighton comprehensively completed a home and away double over their more experienced rivals, with Peter Ward in mesmeric form. Alan Mullery’s Seagulls finished a respectable 16th that season.

1. Paul Bradshaw- Joined Wolves in a club record £150,000 deal in 1977. Picked the ball out of the net three times in the return fixture at the Goldstone in April 1980.2. Geoff Palmer- Right-back who appeared in both Wolves’ League Cup triumphs of 1974 and 1980.
3. Derek Parkin- Became Britain’s most expensive full-back when he joined Wolves in 1968, at the cost of £80,000. Took Ward off on 24 minutes with a last-ditch challenge with Bradshaw in no man’s land.
4. John MeAlle- Loyal club servant who made 508 appearances for Wolves between 1967 and 1981.
5. Emlyn Hughes- Former Liverpool and England defender who became a household name on BBC’s A Question of Sport.
6. George Berry- Defender who caught the eye with his Afro haircut. Made 124 appearances for Wolves.
7. Kenny Hibbitt- Contributed nine goals for Wolves in the 1979/80 season, including three from the spot.
8. Willie Carr- Scottish international midfielder who played all but the last two games of the campaign.

9. Wayne Clarke- Denied by Graham Moseley diving at his feet in the first half. Later a league champion with Everton in 1987.
10. Mel Eves- Scored a consolation seven minutes from the end.
11. Dave Thomas- This midfield man won eight England caps while at QPR. Skillful and fast player who played without shinpads.
Sub: 12 Colin Brazier- Came on in the 58th minute for McAlle. An unused substitute in the League Cup Final of 1980.
Albion
1. Graham Moseley- Got down smartly to a 30 yard effort from Palmer.
2. John Gregory- The only Albion player who didn’t wear the dimple-soled snow football boots selected by kitman Glen Wilson for the prevailing conditions.
3. Gary Williams- Popular left-back who had scored his first top-flight goal a month earlier in a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough.
4. Brian Horton- Albion skipper. Supplied Ward with a long pass to make the breakthrough on 36 minutes.
5. Gary Stevens- Made just his 14th league appearance for the Seagulls, with Steve Foster’s strained hamstring not risked by Mullery.
6. Peter Suddaby- In his last game before a three-match suspension. Had an ‘absolute stormer’ according to The Argus.

7. Gerry Ryan- With his long dribble, Gerry scored what is considered one of the all-time best Albion goals a week later in a stirring 4-1 victory over Manchester City.

9. Ray Clarke- Headed off the Albion goal line on 19 minutes.
10. Mark Lawrenson- Deployed effectively by Mullery in midfield, a move that boosted the club’s rise up the league table in 1979/80.
