The Seagulls went into this match in optimistic mood having humbled First Division Newcastle United 2-0 at St James’ Park; Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne could not stop Chris Cattlin’s side gaining a shock FA Cup third round victory.
In the following round against Hull on a frosty pitch, the Seagulls took the initiative, once more racing to a 2-0 lead. Even so, it was no cakewalk as the Tigers’ player-boss Brian Horton rolled back the years, tussling with Brighton’s Dennis Mortimer and Danny Wilson in a tough midfield battle. In the end, though, the sharp-shooting of Terry Connor proved decisive.

2. Chris Hutchings- The Seagulls defender had scored the only goal in the previous season’s FA Cup encounter with Hull.
3. Graham Pearce- Former Barnet left-back. The only survivor from the FA Cup Final team of 1983.
4. Danny Wilson- Industrious, influential midfielder who joined the Albion from Nottingham Forest in January 1984.
5. Eric Young- Tall central defender with aerial prowess who joined Brighton from Slough, making excellent progress.
