Personally prefer the original by the Box Tops although Joe Cocker did a good job on his cover. The one by Lemar adds nothing and is the weakest of the three by some margin imo, in fact it annoys me...

Was surprised to discover a few years ago that the Box Tops were a Stax band from Memphis

Anyway as we wait for our record signing vote on your favourite...

Some great miming on the Box Tops video

Lemar's version is terrible. I turn the radio off every time it comes on. Thing is, he's cool to kids my daughter's age, they won't have been aware of the original and will think this one is the bees knees

The Letter was written by Wayne Carson Thompson who also wrote 'Always on My Mind' and 'Neon Rainbow.' He also wrote a song I love called 'Soul Deep.' It was also recorded by the Box Tops, but its Carson's version I like best:

I heard it on a brilliant series of compilations called 'Country Got Soul' which also first introduced me to Bobby Gentry, Dan Penn & Jim Ford, in particular the storming 'Harlan County':

Interesting - any more recommendations? Dan Penn wrote the sublime "Dark End Of The Street". But back to the thread - how about this one?
