Brighton & Hove Albion’s unlikely promotion bid was unravelling with a poor spell of two wins in nine league games from the start of April.
Anything less than a victory over a skillful Ipswich Town side would mean that Barry Lloyd’s side would miss out on a play-off position. It took a late winner from a Dean Wilkins free kick to notch three points and send the Brighton faithful home happy.
For Ipswich, it was the team’s third defeat in four, as John Lyall’s team ended the season in 14th place. A season later, they would be crowned champions.

11. Clive Walker- Played for Sunderland in the League Cup Final of 1985. Fouled by Brian Gayle which led to the penalty on 36 minutes.

5. David Linighan- A steadying influence at the heart of defence. Formerly with Hartlepool and Derby.
6. Brian Gayle- A £350,000 signing from Manchester City. Brian was part of the Wimbledon side that won promotion to Division One in 1986. His foul earned Brighton their penalty on 36 minutes.
7. Romeo Zondervan- Former West Brom midfielder. A Dutch international with six caps.
8. Paul Goddard- Highly-experienced striker nicknamed ‘Sarge’. Had a great career with QPR, West Ham, Newcastle and Derby. Signed from Millwall in February.
9. Simon Milton- A 27-year-old midfielder who contributed six goals during the 1990/91 season.
10. Scott Houghton- Young attacker on loan from Spurs. He made eight appearances for Ipswich, scoring in a recent win over Leicester.
11. Chris Kiwomya- Town’s top scorer reached double figures with his skillful second-half goal. Before that, he had a penalty saved by Digweed.
