Tony Grealish- Scored the winner after Andy Rankin had pushed the ball away. It was his first goal for the Seagulls after his summer move from Luton Town.
Steve Foster- Played up front in the last 20 minutes as Albion hoped his height and power would unsettle the Terriers
Steve Gatting- Struggled in this match, looked uncertain and had to cope as the only centre-back when Steve Foster made his forays upfront.
Jimmy Case- Showed real appetite in this contest and tested Rankin with a good effort early in the second half.
Andy Ritchie- Raced forward, losing possession, but smacked the loose ball from 20 yards past Rankin for the first goal.
Michael Robinson- Was tripped in the build-up to the winner, where the referee decided to play an advantage instead of awarding an Albion penalty
Neil McNab- Had an industrious match and tested Rankin early on
Gordon Smith- A loose back pass put Terry Austin through on goal, but the Terriers attacker fired past the near post.
Sub: Gerry Ryan (for Smith)- This substitution did not come as much of a surprise as Mike Bailey sought to perk up Albion’s attack.
Huddersfield
Andy Rankin- An experienced former Everton and Watford keeper who was a League championship winner in 1970. Dived bravely at Ritchie’s feet in this match.
Malcolm Brown- Received strong praise from The Argus’s John Vinicombe: “Brown gave the best display of attacking full-back play I’ve seen this season. Whenever he went forward, Brighton got the shakes.”
David Burke- A former Bolton defender. David made 41 Third Division appearances in the left-back position.
Philip Wilson- Huddersfield’s best player in the first leg. Wilson made 34 appearances in the league, scoring twice.
Dave Sutton- Club skipper tripped Robinson in the build-up to the winner.
Keith Hanvey- Keith’s career began with Manchester City, but he did not make the grade. After spells with Swansea, Rochdale and Grimsby, this much-travelled defender made the move to Leeds Road, reaching 153 league appearances by the end of 1981/82.
Mark Lillis- This midfielder is a product of the Terriers’ youth system, reaching 88 league games by the end of the season.
Micky Kennedy- Needed five stitches to close a calf wound after Ryan’s tackle.
Terry Austin- Had given the Terriers the lead in the first leg three weeks earlier at Leeds Road.
Ian Robins- An ex-Oldham and Bury forward. Ian amassed 156 league games for the Terriers by the end of the season.
Peter Fletcher- Had a wayward shot after closing down a Gatting clearance. Hit seven goals in Division Three that 1981/82 campaign.
Sub: David Cowling (for Kennedy)- Ended the season as the Terriers’ top League scorer with eight goals.
