Chris Hughton praised a moment of quality that secured a cup win for Albion.
But he admitted his side were below their best at Southend.
Kazenga LuaLua hit the added-time winner as the Seagulls edged through 1-0 at Roots Hall.
He finished calmly after fine work by Tomer Hemed and Danny Holla.
Hughton said: "We weren‘t good enough over the 90 minutes with the ball.
"We got into some decent areas where I thought we made the wrong choices and it was probably just going to be the one clearcut chance that somebody was going to take - and fortunately it was us.

"It was a good finish - one of the bits of quality that was shown in the game, starting with Hemed and the ball going up to him and a really good ball by Danny Holla."It needed something like that to break the deadlock.“
Albion had plenty of defending to do but protected keeper Niki Maenpaa well until the closing stages.
Hughton added: "They had a lot of corners, put us under a lot of pressure, particularly in the latter part of the game.
"But probably that was a good part of our game.
"We had to defend well against a lot of crosses and corners.
"Probably apart from the super save that Niki made there were no clearcut chances that they had.“
