In fact, they are finished as any sort of threat. They will just sink to be a tiny minority party, devoid of any ' protest vote ' attraction. Jumping into bed with the Tories was always going to end badly and Clegg knew he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
They have had their short time in the spotlight and now it has destroyed them. Eaten them up and spat them out.

Really can't see why; historically the centre party has performed badly; it only started doing slightly better when both Labour and Tories moved slightly to the centre, now they're drifting apart again, I expect to see electoral oblivion

They will sink back to being a debating society for those who enjoy such things, without having to worry about the responsibility that comes with being in Government.
They will, however, win a few brownie points/seats in local elections, along the way.
Hopefully, it will also put a sock in the mouth of that sanctimonious windbag, Paddy Pantsdown.

Our democracy is all the poorer for the absence of central parties, but it is going to take years for them to get back to where they were in the mid noughties.

I just wish there was a fairer electoral system such that we get a government of consensus based on the overall mood of the country, not one that was voted for by a minority of the electorate. Every. Single. Time.

And that is the real crime of the Liberal Democrats. Not that they climbed into bed with Tories, but that they had the chance to affect real electoral change for the benefit, and they bargained it away feebly for their own benefit.

This is the only way we will see centre / consensus politics again...don't hold your breath.

That's not quite true though. Part of the coalition agreement was a referendum on a change of voting system - the electorate rejected it massively. Don't think we'll see another referendum on the subject any time soon

Yes, but it was a ridiculous voting change, and not one that the Lib Dems had campaigned for. It was completely half-arsed. No wonder the electorate rejected it.
