Saints in action tonight in the Europa League Qualifier (and look at that lovely ADIDAS KIT)
How times have changed, 5 years ago we finished Champions in League 1 above Saints, "If they can keep up"
Well we didn't keep up in the end
Before you throw toys out of the pram saying "oh look another negative thread"
It's not, it's just a mention to what may have been and what could be achieved, well done to Southampton, a club that like us were in league one 5 years ago, I'll keep dreaming of following the Albion one day "over land and sea"

Southampton are and pretty much always have been a bigger club than us, the only reason they were in league 1 was because they were in financial trouble.

Agree with that, but how we laughed finishing above them that season
But moving in to the Amex with the power of attracting better players and a new massive fan base you'd have thought we'd have kept a little closer in contact with them instead of being worlds apart in the space of 5 years

Complete tit on the Lion and Lobster tonight loudly shouting at the TV, obviously didn't realise that a) he's in Brighton and b) it's a ****ing friendly. Never seen anything like it!

Saints already had an Academy producing very talented youngsters they could sell for millions. That's the difference.

Billionaire owner Markus Liebherr made the difference. He pumped multi-millions into the club, wiping off their debt, providing favourable loans to the club and significant transfer budgets.

They were still making big losses despite the healthy return on academy players sales.

Appointing managers who played attractive football appropriate to the league they played in helped to bring the crowds back.

Southampton's recent climb is no fairytale success story. As usual money talks.

I think you mistake "bigger club" for "successful club". They like many other more successful clubs get smaller crowds when in the same division as us. They therefore cannot be a bigger club. They are historically a more successful club but then that doesn't say much as out jokers on the pitch have pretty much always been useless.

Oxlade-Chamberlain alone went for a £15 million package in 2011. Then Arsenal had to pay Southampton £10K every time he plays more than 20 minutes.

As you say, money talks.
