I'd never heard of DJ Derek until I heard his niece on the radio about 4 weeks ago talking about her search for him. At the time and to my shame I got a totally wrong impression of him. Probably like many might have done, I pictured a 73 year old white man playing a bit of reggae music while they let him have a go at the turntables just to humour him. How wrong I was. Just watching these two video clips I realised he really knew his stuff and he was really respected by the local Jamaican community in Bristol for his knowledge and passion for the music. He might not have looked the part with his national health specs and cardigan, but never judge a book by its cover... A real inspiration. These clips are mainly of him talking and are probably filmed at least ten years after the video documentary posted above.

Saw him at the Fortune of War a few years back (amongst other times), my pal didn't know he was an old white guy until the end of the evening when he finally saw the DJ. He nearly didn't believe me until Derek started speaking patois.
