Just a quick one, anyone bought one and is it worth the risk and saving on buying brand new?

My school runs a pool of just over 500 of them.
Because of the solid state drives -- no more spinning disks, hurrah! -- they have been very durable and very reliable.
Spills, and excessive pressure on the top cover damaging the screen (usually from being shoved into already-full backpacks) are responsible for the lion's share of the serious issues. Is an Apple warranty still available? They warranty their own refurbs more or less as new.

If you're talking about the Apple refurb store then you can buy in confidence. Machines are generally new and come with full Apple warranty.
