R.I.P. Ian Allan

From facebook. AN ALLAN OBE. It is with great sadness that I have to pass on news Ian Allan passed away peacefully last night . He was 93.

For all the unashamed trainspotters (including me) on NSC.

Bus spotters too Norman!, bus spotters too!

In my misspent youth l spent many years living near the Ian Allan headquarters at Terminal House in Shepperton, and bought a great many of his publications. Mainly books on buses, but trains, and civil aircraft too.

Yes R.I.P Ian.

We're called bus wankers now

Blimey! I remember hours as a kid standing on the patform at Brighton station with one of his books, underlining numbers.

It was either that or girls, and they were far more scary.

And before moving to Hassocks we used to stand beside the line at Egham collecting steam train numbers, underlining like there was no tomorrow. And sounding knowledeble about 2 4 2´s and 4 2 2´s

However did we get through puberty without Ian Allen and the I Spy books?

Just for you then, bus porn. I am sure that your are, like me, fascinated that the Brighton to Eastbourne bus route is still the 12.

Yes, but ... when I had the responsibility to decide all of the bus route numbers in East Sussex, it was route 112.

Hands up all those NSC users who would have LOVED that job!

:)

You have absolutely NO idea how much l would have loved that job!

Although l'm glad it wasn't you responsible for changing bus route numbers in WEST Sussex. Who on earth renumbered the Brighton to Southsea service to 700 when Stagecoach took over from Southdown???? The man (or woman) responsible should be shot.

The 700 was around long before Stagecoach as I used to use this as a kid to visit my Grandmother. It was an hourly limited stop service back then rather than the every other minute, broken up snail service it is now.

I'm another member of the (former) trainspotters gang on here. Many a mis-spent hour at Clapham Junction or Vauxhall ticking numbers off. I even got an absolute rollocking off a guard at Catford Bridge (I had an uncle who lived at Beckenham) while trying to grab a number, as I was sticking my head out of the window. My long-lasting memory of the Ian Allan headquarters was of a then brand new Class 508 (they replaced the old 4-SUBs on lines out of Waterloo, but were later transferred to Merseyside) overshooting the buffers at Shepperton and sitting there suspended above the office. Anyway, RIP Ian Allan. I expect Modern Railways will give him a fair old write-up, though I don't think that magazine is published by them any more.
