Assistant Referee's Penalty signal

We learn something new everyday. Was at an FA sponsored event at Brighton's training ground yesterday which was promoting women and girls football. They had a referees section and showing flag signals. I queried why they didn't include the penalty signal, ie flag held horizontally across the chest and they advised that this isn't recognized by FIFA nor Uefa and is going to be discontinued next year.

Hold on....
So instead of indicating it is a penalty in his/her eyes by holding the flag across their chest thus enabling Giggs, Rooney et al to square up to said assistant, they will now frantically 'agitate' or wave their flag in the air screaming 'penalty penalty penalty' to the ref thus enabling Giggs Rooney et al to square up to said assistant.
Perfectly clear.

They should be allowed to punch the tossers straight in the boat.

Doesn't really affect us , the assistant refs never see infringements that merit a penalty when we're playing.

It was removed from the laws of the game this past season. I guess the theory is that the assistants don't have a signal to indicate a foul is a free kick, so why should they have one to indicate a penalty? The penalty or free kick is award by the referee when he decides a foul has occurred - even if the linesman flags, it's not a foul unless the referee agrees/accepts the lino's view from a better position

That's how I read it. Might be radical but why didn't they think the best answer would be to penalise the players that get in the face of the assistant referee (sod, let's just call them linesmen)!

But there is a signal, frantically waving flag from side to side before pointing in the direction of the end being defended by the offending team.

It's probably all technicalities, but that's a signal saying that an infringement has occurred, not what punishments are to be given (there isn't a different signal for indirect free kick or direct free kick; yellow, red, or no card; or dropped ball etc). As such, it should be/has been deemed suitable for fouls that occur in the box, too.

That's all well and good at higher levels where refs and assistants are miced up and can ask if it was in the box or out, but at lower levels the assistant will flag, ref will have to come over and ask if in or out, whilst coping loads of abuse from all and sundry.

At least with the existing signal it is obvious.

Or look at each other and use hand gestures, such as the additional hand gesture sometimes given with handballs, or offsides.

The correct course of action for the assistant is to signal a foul, then if the ref points to the spot, he then runs to the line and stands by the corner flag. As of start of last season.
