He played his best game for us in the WBA replay , first and only time he has played the No.10 role. His strongest position is right sided so dont read too much into games when he is playing left sided , he can play there but much like March seems miles better on the right I suspect Ali J is best that side or central as a No.10.

I really hope he works out, but I equally hope it doesn't become another CMS drama à la 'Didn't play to his strengths' or 'Played in the wrong position'. If he's good enough, it will work out.

My observations from yesterday's game were that he has a great touch and good technique, as you say. But at times he looked a little hesitant and lacking in confidence. Hopefully, with game time that'll come. There's definitely a player in there. Strange that so many seem to be writing him off so quickly. Actually, it's not strange but entirely predictable and not without precedent.

Isn't that just a lack of understanding about what runs, etc his team mates will be making?, therefore a run in the team would increase his understanding and reduce this 'hesitancy'

He has missed a lot of the season with injury and then whilst away on international duty, so his chances to develop that understanding have been limited thus far

The thing that concerns me is his lack of pace. Not saying he's slow but not particularly quick. He's not massively skilful either so it's hard for him to take players on. Plus bar Izquierdo we don't have quick players who give him more room to play. I'm sure he'll get better but not sure he'll be as good as we hoped.

I really think we need to address the lack of pace in the squad for next season.

I cant remember any significant contribution that he's produced so far. Locadia has been ripped to pieces on here at times, but has improved recently and scored a few important goals. I hope his injury is not as bad as it looked at the time.

I've yet to see any evidence that he's as good as Jamie Murphy, who ran at defenders and even scored goals occasionally.

Funnily enough Murphy popped into my head after Alireza had the chance to run at the defender 1 on 1 and bottled it. It was the opposite of what Murphy would have done against Championship opposition like Derby.

At West Brom he was up against a couple of 15-year olds.

I'm not writing him off just yet, but the guy has made zero impact here so far. Zilch. If he's got something about him, he needs to start showing it soon, because for that kind of outlay I'm expecting to at LEAST see signs of someone who can damage the opposition. And so far, he's done naff all.

He needs to adjust to the physical and pace demands of the English game, he needs game time.

In terms of style, he really reminds me of David Beckham in some aspects with a sprinkling of Skalak in others but with one glaring difference, he does not appear to be a free kick specialist (although he is Hemed level at penalties).

He is not the fastest. He does not have the tricks to pass players. He has not got a big physical presence and like Locadia, clearly prefers playing in a front 3. Yet he was top scorer in the Eredivisie last season.

Looking at the goals he has scored in the Netherlands, it’s clear he has the following:

1. Great shooting ability.
2. Great ball control.
3. Great positioning.

His Dutch record shows that he needs a season to settle in. Those wanting him to find form now might not see it so if they can’t wait until next season, they’d be justified in calling for him to be sold; I don’t think we’ll see his best until next season.

March and Knocky are our 1st choice wingers with Locadia & Izquierdo out. It’s up to Ali-J to get up to speed as soon as possible to put pressure on them. A goal would make all the difference I feel as a lack of confidence seems to be his biggest issue.

Anyway, I’m going to play the long game with this guy and judge him next season.

Jury still very much our for me, he's done very little that you could call productive so far. Yes he needs time to adapt to the game over here, but he's a fully fledged International, and we can't really afford passengers in our situation. He needs to start producing and having an impact soon.

This.
Poor on Saturday against poor opposition.
Next season hopefully

Needs more game time and also needs time to gel with the other players, much too early to think about writing him off, buy hey this is NSC so snap decisions on players is the norm.
