Came to the conclusion that the gear box might need a look at, the problem is that when you go from 3rd to 2nd (when the revs/speed is too high) it makes a sorta grating sound? But is alright when at a slower speed/less revs..

Wondering if its better to get the gear box reconditioned by a professional company or to buy another one and have someone fit that into the car?

Secondly my cars engine is an A-series from 1993, being a Mini people have suggested 20w50 oil (the most) then 10w40 oil, and then 10w50 oil - any idea which is best to use?

I was expecting this thread to be about your windscreen being smashed by Special Forces armed with guns.

gear box: have a mechanic check to see whats wrong, without mention of replacing it. it could linkage or somthing else relativly cheap. gear box replacement is not.
oil: what does your Haynes manual say. (what do you mean you dont have one? how do you fix it then?) at a guess 20w50 sounds more likely. 10w40? think thats more likely for a new one.

Just asked around on a mini forum they are saying its a worn baulkring which naturally happens (apparently) , but if you double de-clutch it gets around the problem. (no idea how much they are to fix)

And I have been looking at different oils, people recommend all sorts but by the sounds of it 20w50 is the one to go for

I'd go 20/50 mainly because the gearbox is lubricated by the same oil as the engine. IF the gearbox used a seperate oil it would be 75,80 0r 90 grade so the engine oil in a mini has to be quite thick. The higher the number the thicker the oil. Agree with worn baulk ring or maybe synchromesh hub fault. Quite a big job to repair as entire power unit must be removed and then seperated.Best to practice double de-clutching I feel.

Do you know roughly how much it'd cost to fix either the baulk ring/synchromesh hub? I hope its nothing sky high

Off the top of my head I can't imagine there would be any change from £500.00, possibly more. Speak to a specialist gearbox company would be my advice. Sorry, good luck.

Just had another look around on line, found out the guy had a new clutch fitted, and apparently that could be causing the sound if the linkage was effected? Any ideas or am I going in the wrong direction?
