Skirmishes with police reportedly broke out as protesters ran down Whitehall

Angry protesters waving placards and flags have gathered to protest against the Government's austerity measures.

Around 200 people joined the protest which began in Trafalgar Square, central London, after the Queen's speech outlined the new Conservative Government's plans.
There were skirmishes with police as protesters - some wearing masks and scarves to cover their faces - ran down Whitehall.
Uniformed police linked arms to form a human barricade to try to contain the protesters while some pulled out their batons to warn off demonstrators.

One man was pinned to the ground by police officers who arrested him after trouble flared up near Parliament Square.
Elliot Corner, 20, who studies classical music at the Royal College of Music in London, was peacefully protesting in Trafalgar Square.
He said: “We are here today because we believe that austerity is a failed economic measure and transfers wealth from the poor to the rich.
"We believe the new cuts that are planned by George Osborne are completely unfair and unwarranted."

A non-story really, more of a flash mob than a protest. June 20th is the big one however.

Although as the bleak realities of this government start to kick in, I predict the civil unrest will be at a level unprecedented for generations over the coming years.

You'd really like that too.

The quoted girl is a student. You do realise that vital workers have to go through university, don't you?

Besides which, students spend money and support a large base of employment - universities don't run for free.

Wait until they're in full-time permanent employment earning at least the national average salary.
See if they still want to protest.
Why would they not want to protest? Their ideal is that austerity is cutting basic and essential services to the most needy, whilst the super rich increase their fortunes. Why would their stand point change?

Thought you were better than that. Didn't take you for the kind of sucker that believes the BS that half the population needs a degree, it doesn't. Vital workers include nurses (don't believe the new job criteria) Police, refuse collectors, road contractors etc etc. We do not need half of our population working as doctors, social workers, psychiatrists, we need a balanced workforce, not everybody believing that they deserve one of top jobs.

You tend to need a degree to take on something like teaching. Is that a pointless occupation?

Both tourism and drama are worth billions to the world economy. Are they worthless?

She is actually studying music. Presumably a subject gauged as worthless by you.

By 'population', are you counting the people who didn't vote in that?
