"If your dog's in trouble, call the emergency services on 999"

Perhaps I'm being controversial here, but I was surprised when I heard someone from the Coastguard Agency on Radio Sussex this morning say that you should call "the emergency services" on 999 if your dog wanders into a rough sea. I didn't think the fire service, coastguard and RNLI would risk their lives trying to save a dog, let alone the money involved.

Is this normal advice? What are people's thoughts on this?

Anyone who reads the "Bell Cheeses at Work" thread can probably work out my opinion on this matter.

This is the favourite story of a bloke I know.

He's never more animated than when the news begins with:-

"A 45 year old man drowned today attempting to rescue his dog..."
(Friend) 'go on say it, say it, go on, say it...'
"The dog managed to crawl to safety and survived"
(Friend - Now hysterical, half laughing half maniacal) 'yeeeeessss, oh yes, they always f***ing well do, yes'.

Probably best for a police marksman to put the dog out of its misery.

Except this time one dog did not make it.

I wasn't aware that this was a specific local case, I apologise if anyone takes my post as bad taste.

Believe me I massively cleaned up my friends reaction to such tragedies.

I believe the fire service charge when they rescue an animal.

They do.

Some years back one of our horses fell in the River Mole at the bottom of our property and couldn't get back up the steep bank, (the vet later diagnosed a stroke). The Fire Brigade were magnificent in helping to get him out although he had to be later put down. We got a bill for about £500 which I thought was excellent value for 6 or 7 men plus all their equipment for more than three hours.

I didn't realise there was a specific local case either, as I switched on part way through (though it would explain why they were discussing it).
