"Chesterfield boss Paul Cook has agreed a deal to take charge of Portsmouth, BBC Radio Sheffield reports.

League Two side Pompey were refused permission to speak to Cook in April following the departure of Andy Awford, it is understood that assistant Leam Richardson is under consideration for the manager post at the Proact Stadium.

But Former Wolves and Doncaster boss Dean Saunders and ex-Sheffield United striker Brian Deane are also believed to be in the frame, Cook has been in charge of Chesterfield since October 2012.

He guided them to last season's League Two title and their good form continued in this campaign, securing a play-off spot with a sixth-placed finish."

At least its football related news

Cold shithole to less cold shithole?

£xxK a year at Chesterfield, £xx+20K a year at Portsmouth?
Are Portsmouth really likely to be paying £20K a year more? Even if they are, £20K a year over a three year contract probably won't even make up for the difference in house prices.

Portsmouth are the perfect club for an ambitious League 1 or League 2 manager, sometimes you've got to take a step backward to take a step forward (Michel Kuipers, 2001).

Kenny Jackett went from a comfortable job at Millwall to Wolves in League 1, take a look at where they respectively stand now. Paul Cook's a good manager at that level, Portsmouth will be promoted next season under his leadership. Chesterfield is a far smaller club than Portsmouth, it's a cracking job for any lower league managers looking to develop at a bigger club.

I've corrected your error for you.

Ninj, I count you as a mate, but please don't blaspheme like that. Your post makes small children cry.

Why would he want to go from Chesterfield to drop down a division to Portsmouth?

So he has the right to put the letters T,W,A & T after his name.

Steve Evans dropped a league to manage Rotherham from Crawley. It's pretty clear that Rotherham with a new ground had more potential.

So rather than focus on Chesterfield getting promoted he's had his head turned by Pompey in April? Why can't these idiots managers do the right thing and wait until the season is done?

Distinct lack of the obligatory #twats on this thread.

But at least with (yet another) new manager arriving, we'll get to enjoy the annual "We're going to smash this league" proclamations again from The Greatest Fans In The World
