Wolves lads finish season in style
Wolves Academy Under-18s rounded off their season in emphatic style with an 8-0 win over Brighton at Compton Park this afternoon.
Midfielder Ryan Rainey struck a hat trick, taking his tally to five in the last two games, substitute Brad Lindsey added a brace, and there were further goals for Mekhi Leacock-McLeod, Tendai Matinyadze and Under-15 player Morgan Gibbs-White.
In front of the watching Head Coach Kenny Jackett, the performance gave Wolves a strong finish to the second phase of the Academy season in which they have won three and drawn three of their seven games.
That follows finishing fifth in the initial league stages, and means Wolves rounded off the campaign with eight wins, three draws and one defeat from their final 12 fixtures.
Wolves made a strong start against Brighton, Nicu Carnat seeing an early shot saved by keeper Bailey Vose and Niall Ennis having an effort blocked by a defender after jinking his way into the area.
A Brighton free kick was then watched wide by Harry Burgoyne before Wolves went in front in the 13th minute.
A burst down the right from the lively Leacock-McLeod saw his cross evade Ennis, only for Rainey to take a neat touch before slotting home, left-footed, across Vose and into the bottom corner.
Carnat almost added a second six minutes later, turning well and hitting a shot which was saved by Vose.
Bright Enobakhare was then agonisingly wide as he tried to pick his spot before Carnat was again denied by the Brighton keeper.
The game settled without too many clear-cut chances, at least until seven minutes before half time, when Rainey notched his second.
The Irishman took advantage of some good build-up to stride onto a pass on the edge of the box and find the net with a powerful shot.
Brighton needed to respond quickly if they were to get back into the game, and after a free kick wasn’t cleared, Daniel Ajiboye hit a snapshot which was over.
Wolves had controlled proceedings in the first half but went goal crazy in the second, four goals in a 15-minute spell effectively ending the game as a contest.
Carnat had already put a shot wide of the target before Rainey turned provider on 50 minutes, playing in substitute Brad Lindsey to beat the onrushing keeper.
Lindsey then added his second three minutes later, Enobakhare this time the provider with a pass from which the striker fired an excellent shot into the roof of the net.
The onslaught continued and on 62 minutes, Rainey completed his hat trick.
The ball was pulled back across goal and, with the goalkeeper out of position, Rainey managed to hook the ball over his head and across the line despite losing his balance.
The quickfire goal surge continued three minutes later as Leacock-McLeod got the goal his persistence deserved after a defence-splitting pass from Lindsey.
Brighton weren’t simply lying down and Tom Cadman brought a save out of Burgoyne, only for Wolves to go back up the other end with Enobakhare’s effort coming back off the outside of the post.
Ten minutes from time came Wolves’ seventh goal, substitute Gibbs-White chesting down an attempted clearance before scoring with a well struck shot.
Shortly afterwards Lindsey was denied his hat trick by a good save, but the scoring was completed on 87 minutes when Matinyadze fired home after a one-two with Enobakhare.

Have we gone up the leagues this ur in u18s too? If we did then the club academy bloke did hint there could be some results like this (although was mainly talking about dev squad I think)

They've had a very disappointing second half to the season , partly because promising players like James Tilley have been promoted to the u21s.
But this season the u18s have had victories over Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea, Villa, Norwich and only 2 weeks ago Liverpool.

Might have something to do with Simon Rusk's promotion to the under-21s also? Seemed to be doing a great job with them earlier in the season. Do we know who is in charge of the u18s now?

New training ground working well so far then

It's rare for the u18s to be discussed on here . Wrong to make a rash conclusion about this poor result or equally the victory over Liverpool a fortnight ago or defeats of Chelsea etc earlier this season.

Hooton must have been around about the start of that run....Very similar to the first team lol

You can never be quite sure of the dynamics of the result of the youth and U21's teams, however there really is never a positive point to losing 8-0, perhaps bounceabackability if that does happen, but it indicates a complete dominance by Wolves.

But as has been stated perhaps the 2nd year released scholars have left and a couple of key players promoted to the U21's, so younger new scholars perhaps had a baptism of fire, whilst Wolves accesses their best older scholars and to be first year pro's.

Similarly perhaps Wolves just have a better side, coach, academy and ethos !!
