Not seen anything on here,
Read through and it sounds like Lib Dems did badly, but no mention of Farage, did he win, did they get any seats?

Lots of votes but only one seat so far. They've received twice as many votes as the SNP (3m to 1.4m) qbut only have one seat compared to the 56 (?) the SNP have so far. I'm no fan of UKIP but it does seem strange that you can win so many votes and end up with so few seats.

The SNP got 1.4m votes out of a possible 4m (roughly I can only find figures including 16 and 17 year olds).

UKIP got 3m out of 46m.

So there is your explanation for that. Though of course you knew that really.

Should be the country's 3rd largest party with the votes they got, but only one seat.

Something's not right is it.

I'm quite disappointed by this.

I know UKIP and their Voters get a fair amount of flack on here, but getting the third highest votes in the UK, by quite a large margin, to only have 1 seat doesn't seem right.

Votes so far:

  • Conservative: 10.9m
  • Labour: 9.1m
  • UKIP: 3.7m
  • Lib Dems: 2.3m
  • SNP: 1.4m
  • Green: 1.1m

Hoping UKIP can claim Thanet South. Results imminent.

Why are people so upset about the voting system just because UKIP are suffering?

The Lib Dems have suffered in this way for DECADES. The UKIP candidate at Clacton made a big deal of it in his winning acceptance speech. Funny that it wasn't an issue for him when he winning on behalf of the Conservatives!

This.

People can't whinge about the voting system post election if the results don't go their way.

HOWEVER

I can't see the electoral system staying as it is. The rise of support for "alternative" parties means that almost 25% of the electorate are now looking for something different.

And as has been said many many times before. You get 37% of the vote and that is a mandate to govern? It's pretty crazy.

What a pointless argument!

Its all relative to the amount of people in the constituency

UKIP May of had 3 million votes but why should they get more MP's if 2.9 million of them votes were all based in say Cardiff?

You vote in a constituence for an MP to represent that area.

1 area 1 seat, why is that so hard for people to understand that?

I despise UKIP and all they represent - but 3.7 million voters getting 1 MP is not democracy.

We do need to accept that many of those voters were simply making a protest, and comment about our place in Europe. Many Labour and Tory voters that felt their vote wouldn't make a difference, will have voted UKIP to make a statement. If we had PR, they may have had a lot less votes.

That's all well and good, but in this election UKIP came out second in dozens of constituencies.

Let's 'pretend' that 33% of voters from 50 different constituencies voted UKIP making this party the 'runner-up'.
Is it fair that the millions of voters over the UK won't be represented?

3.8 million UKIP voters all over the UK represented by 1 (possibly 2) MP.
1.4 million SNP voters mostly from (or in) Scotland represented by 56 MP's.

I moaned about the system BEFORE the election. As a voter I feel my opinion is not represented in parliament.

Blame the Lib Dems. They should have insisted on a vote on proper proportional representation before doing a deal with the Cons. Stupid feckers shot themselves in the foot there.

SNP votes not mostly in Scotland, ONLY in Scotland, obviously. The SNP getting that many seats is not the big problem here. They nailed it in Scotland and should have the majority of seats in Scotland. The Scottish people have overwhelmingly voted for socialist parties/policies 74.3% of Scottish votes have gone to Labour or SNP, their opinions will be represented in Westminster.

The 12.6% who voted for UKIP are not being represented. That is the problem here. Ignore the SNP and Scotland in this unjust system, it is England and the opinions of it's voters that are being misrepresented.

Back to Ukip. The answer looks to be badly. Farage originally predicted up to 40 seats which he revised to a dozen and then a hand-full but looks to be on course to get 1 or 2. Considering Ukip went into the election with two this can only be considered as being poor.

Will Farage resign, as promised, if he doesn't win his seat?

SNP will be representing the areas they were voted in (basically Scotland only).

They WON their seats, UKIP won 1 seat and that's it.

Why should the basis that UKIP came a close 3rd but with more individual votes than SNP give them the right to more seats to represent them, which areas of the country would you expect these UKIP MP's to represent?

Would you expect because UKIP had more votes they could then slid an MP in to represent Bradford?

Doesn't work pal!

This is the issue.
12.6% of all voters being represented by just 1 person.
