Why are they the ones who are getting slaughtered here?

Obviously their core vote feels let down by going into coalition with the Tories and then giving up too many of their core principles, but it's odd that they are comfortably the biggest losers.

I reckon the impact will be that 2010 was the last time we'll ever see them go into coalition with the Tories, and possibly they'll never do so with the Labour party either.

Their campaign has rather reminded me of the Albion, the 2014/15 version at least.

Left their trusty principles behind, have failed to make the most of some excellent opportunities, and have generally failed to inspire anybody who's watched them over the last few months.

They did the right thing going into the coalition and did a good job as junior partners. The journey they started on raising no income tax band was great

They didn't sell their principles, they made a big mistake on tuition fees but there wasn't the money for that policy. I believe they have prevented excessive austerity and they've pushed up the tax free personal allowance. Their 2015 manifesto is still much like their 2010 manifesto. The sooner UKIP f**k off and die the better.

What are going to do with all those placards that say "Winning here!"

They won't all fit down the toilet.

The electorate don't agree with either of you. They think the LibDems did a shit job and that's all that matters

It matters why they think that. If the LIb Dems really WERE sh1te and yet the economy has bounced back despite them in coalition then the Tories must have been amazing, in which case why aren't they going to win a majority?

It doesn't make any sense.

DC has, on paper, been presented with an open goal over the mediocre leadership of Ed Milliband yet, somehow he has fallen ass over tit six yards out. The Tories will win this not because they have good policies or a mandate from the people but, because the Labour party have lost so many seats in Scotland.

I think, over the last two decades, voters got fed up with both Labour & Conservatives, so they voted LibDem as an alternative. Now there are other parties to chose from, the alternative votes have been split, so the LibDems have taken the hit.
The one time that they got any power, they haven't produced.

They went in to coalition with the conservatives around one major issue which was voting reform, this was a once in a lifetime chance for them to force a referendum through. Unfortunately they made a massive mistake agreeing to a referendum which did not include the option for proportional representation and instead settled for Alternative Vote which nobody could see the point in.

The one good thing that could come out of all of this is that that the political landscape is so fragmented now that the voting system must surely need to be looked at again as it is clear that the main USP for keeping first past the post (the belief that it leads to a decisive result and strong government) has now been shown over two elections to not hold true.

Wake up and smell the coffee. The electoral system will never change in this country. The men in grey suits won't allow it. Too much vested interest.
The whole purpose of first past the post is to ensure that the Conservative party is never subjected to a diminution of their vote by minority parties via PR. Labour realised this years ago as well. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas.

Your second paragraph answers your original question. Sold the principals of the party for 5 years of power.

They have successfully destroyed their political future by hitching their horse to the Tory post. An exercise in futility.

Glad you feel that way. Try telling that to the 47 or so Liberal MP's out of a job. They need to start preparing for 20 years in the political wilderness.

i think it shows that alot of their vote has been protest or seeking an alternative to the big two. with them in government, that no longer sells. i wonder if they would have had a similar reaction had they formed a coalition with Labour.

shame, as they've lost a number of pretty decent MPs, but thats politics.

The LDs had about 10% of seats in parliament. They never stood a chance of winning a majority, so their only chance of power was in a coalition. They took that chance and it has backfired on them.
Best news of the night though - Baker OUT!

Very different now though, first past the post massively favours the SNP as well and this is an potential achilles heel for both Labour and the Conservatives.
