Having been to Shimla, I can confirm that it wasn't filmed there but I did enjoy the series.

apparently filmed in Malaya
I have read numerous books about that time(as my other half was born there) it certainly was an interesting time in history.

Down at our busy local restaurant round the corner from Simster's gaff in Virginia Water, Surrey, Chief Running Bull and his missus Sioux Ellen always manage to get a table. One night I took the maitre de to one side and asked him how he managed to always get a table. 'Oh, he's got a reservation' he informed me.
