The bottom line, how much do we need to spend to get a squad capable of competing for an automatic promotion place ?

How much is Paul Barber's notice fee, and Gus' sign up fee. That should cover it.

A crazy Saturday night thread. I would be surprised if we spend more than £2m. But of course it will be 'undisclosed'. Expect another five loan signings for next year.

Let's say...

£2m on some gem of a striker from the spanish leagues rather than 2.5-3m for some league one top scorer
Backed up with a young reserve from a championship side for somewhere between 30k and 300k depending on who you ask, rather than 500k for a striker from a relegated to league one team
Pick up an out of contract defensive midfield player who wasn't taken on by his top premier league club, but will thrive for us rather than 500k on a player who scores a great free kick then does nothing
An ex-champions league creative attacking midfielder on a free, rather than bring in on loan some ex-prem star who just wants to sit in his hotel watching porn

Just to start with

15 million seems to be the general opinion on funds needed, that will get us and ok side at best. Isn't that the amount Gus asked for to take us up to the prem, he was told to go and do one, then told he would not even get half that. We had a really class team then. Raiding League 1 and the loans market again on the cheap will be the way forward next year. Player are loaned out for a reason... mostly they are not good enough to get in their own teams so why do we want them.

Oh yes, that's it!! So bloody simple, why didn't the Albion staff think of this? Are you going to contact them or shall I?

I do not believe it is the transfer fees that are so much the issue, it is more the wages. £20k a week over three years is £3million on wages alone and for one player. That is the minimum a proven quality striker at this level will want under contract.. oh and yes then there is the transfer fee.

Success cannot be bought.

£11m of that from th sale of Ulloa and Buckley from last year as that money was not spent. The problem is we will drag our heels at the start of the window, told to judge the squad at the end of the window with the promise of a squad good enough for a top 6 place, then pick up a couple of average players for £1.5m and get a few loans in.

Time and time again it has been proved that money is far from the only consideration in putting together a quality side in this division.

We need quality choices more than money.
