Neale Barry it was. He replaced a run-of-the-mill ref called Graham Pooley a few days before the game. Barry was promoted to the Premier League refs' list that year and the FL decided they needed someone good on a game like that.
Neale Barry was the calmest person at Edgar Street that day and turned out to be a good choice.
Met him in a pub car park outside Hereford before the game. I saw he had an FA badge on his blazer and asked him: " Are you something to do with the game?".
He replied:"I am the ref" !
Taken aback I mumbled that I hoped the game would finish.
