Local-born defender Julian Winter popped up with the only goal for the Terriers in their 1-0 victory over Brighton in September. The result at the Goldstone gave Mick Buxton’s side their first win of the season, and it was the first taste of defeat for in-form Seagulls.Chris Cattlin’s Brighton side had fallen to 11th by the time of the return fixture at Leeds Road in December. Even so, they avenged the earlier defeat despite the loss of Terry Connor. His knee injury was sustained from a heavy Sam Alladyce challenge shortly after the interval.
Then, Dale Tempest gave the home side the lead with a header after a Graham Cooper cross. However, Albion were back level within 90 seconds, as Steve Penney found space from the right to cross for Gerry Ryan’s header at the far post. With Brighton now on top, Danny Wilson sent O’Regan through down the right.
When his cross was parried, Ryan netted his second goal of the match. The 2-1 scoreline kept Brighton in 11th position but Huddersfield fell from fifth to eighth.* By the end of the season, the Seagulls finished sixth, just three points short of promotion. As for Huddersfield, some indifferent form led to a 13th place finish.

1984/85 season’s highs and lowsAugust: Victories over Carlisle and Notts County take Brighton unofficially to top spot in Division Two, although the league tables were not yet published after two matches.
September: Frank Worthington, Terry Connor, Steve Penney and Gary Howlett are all on target in a superb 4-2 win in Cardiff. This is followed by a 1-0 success against Crystal Palace, courtesy of Gary O’Reilly’s goal.*
October: A humdinger of a long-range shot against Birmingham by Steve Penney seals the only win in the month.
November: Terry Connor’s goal ends a dismal run of five matches without a goal but the Seagulls crash to 12th after a 2-1 home defeat by Middlesbrough.
December: Wimbledon visit the Goldstone Ground for the first time and take the lead, but go home pointless after Frank Worthington’s second-half winner.
January: Chris Hutchings gets the only goal against Hull City in the FA Cup, but Albion crash out of the competition in their next match, after a 2-1 defeat by Barnsley.
February: A good Chris Hutchings finish from a corner seals a 1-0 victory over Cardiff, taking Albion up to seventh.
March: A run of three wins and three draws lifts the Seagulls to sixth,, giving the team an outside chance of promotion.
April: Brighton draw 1-1 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, in a match sadly remembered for Henry Hughton’s sending off for a challenge on Gerry Ryan.
May: After going 2-0 down with 15 minutes left at Grimsby, the Seagulls score four goals in a sensational comeback. Unfortunately, the three victories in May were not enough to clinch promotion.
