I've just acquired an 8 year old MAC from in laws. The reason for me acquiring it is that the thing now just beeps at you when you turn it on. It's had sod all use over its 8 years so perhaps it got bored and decided to sleep permanently. The bleeps are 3 short, 3 long, 3 short and a blank screen. From a google search there are suggestions that it could be RAM issues, firmware update problems or motherboard replacement. The third option sounds expensive but does anyone know order of costs for the others or if there may be another explanation? I've been recommended a computer repair place that charges £40 to look at the thing with this taken off the repair cost but if its hundreds to repair then I'd rather not bother.

Any helpful advice would be appreciated

I've got the same issue. I tried to swap the ram over, screwed it up, now it won't turn on. I'm not sure whether it's the ram which is ****ed or the computer.

I'd get a professional to look at it and tell you what the problem is first. New ram is cheap (like, less that £80), new computery bits like logic boards are not.

First thing to try is to remove and reinstall the RAM.

What model/date is the Mac? I might have some old RAM modules kicking around.

Also, if you live in Brighton, or near an Apple Store, get online and book a Genius Bar appointment and they will take a look and run some tests for free. Doesn't matter how old the Mac is, I was in with an old 12 year old G3 iBook not so long ago!

Many thanks - I'm not too far from an apple store so I'll do that; I didn't realise that they would look at equipment that wasn't in warrantee. I'll also see if I can find the RAM and see what effect that has, I've never had a Mac so am a bit of a novice!

Thanks again

Cheers - I prefer to learn from others' experience so I might leave off the RAM change. No idea where it is anyway
