A work colleague had a pair of White Rats and they were both dead in a year, one died of pneumonia and the other one some kind of kidney problem. It always struck me as odd as wild Rats live off any shat they can get hold of and live in drains or holes in the ground yet you put them in a nice clean cage and give them proper food and they die ? just weird.

Hamsters are a very useful tool for introducing, at an early stage to your child, the concept of death.
