Brighton & Hove Albion women beat Lewes 3-0 in the first Sussex derby of the season, thanks to goals from Jay Blackie, Fliss Gibbons and Sophie Perry at Culver Road.

The win sees James Marrs’s side maintain the pace with fellow title contenders Cardiff and Portsmouth, as the Seagulls secured their 12th win in 16 league games.Lewes, managed by former Albion head coach John Donoghue, had a host of former Seagulls players in the side which included Cherelle Khassal, Kim Stenning and Rebecca Thompson, who all donned the blue-and-white stripes last season.
Both sides struggled to adapt to the blustery conditions, with few chances for either side inside the opening 45 minutes.
The Rookettes created the marginally better opportunities, as Faye Baker was called into action to tip away Katie McIntyre’s ball into the box before Thomspon fired a follow-up strike wide of the left-hand post.
Kelly McCullock then almost managed to intercept the Albion keeper inside the box, before the shot-stopper cleared the ball away.
Albion’s best chance of the half fell to Deanna Cooper inside the area as she headed Charlotte Gurr’s corner over the crossbar.
Lewes had a couple of half-chances to break the deadlock before the break, as Khassal’s free kick flashed past the goal after failing to find a Rookettes player before Kelly Newton fired a close-range strike straight at Baker.
Charlotte Owen was next to come close for the Seagulls after flicking a shot wide of the near post from Gurr’s corner.
The diminutive forward then turned provider after threading in a superb through ball into the path of Gurr, but after a driving run, she fired an attempt straight at Rookettes’ keeper Alison Cowling.

Albion had the first meaningful chance after the break, when Gurr strode forward on the counter-attack and almost found Owen inside the box, only for Lewes to clear the danger.Cooper was next to make a surging run into the Lewes half and saw her looping strike saved by Cowling.
The Seagulls came closer to taking the lead when Perry’s free kick skimmed the roof of the net, but it was Blackie that broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion after 70 minutes.
The midfielder ran into space and launched an unstoppable strike past Cowling which nested into the top left-hand corner.
Kirsty Barton was next to try her luck from distance, but this time the shot went over the frame of the goal.
Gibbons came on for the final 15 minutes and almost made an immediate impact after sliding in to meet Perry’s ball across the six-yard box, but she narrowly failed to make a decent connection.
But the striker effectively ended the game as a contest with five minutes of normal time remaining, as Baker launched the ball up the pitch and Gibbons coolly dispatched the ball past Cowling to make it 2-0.
Perry made the scoreline more emphatic in the 90th minute after firing a close-range shot past Cowling to give Albion three goals and the three points.
ALBION: Baker; Somes (Gibbons 76), D Cooper, C Cooper, Taylor, Perry; Blackie, Barton, Gurr (Boswell 87); Owen, Rowe (Burt 87).
