It's a set up, as per this snippet from Popbitch

"I was on a train a couple of
months ago sitting opposite a
glamour model type [who was]
bitching about this other girl
who got a part in a TV programme
when she didn't. The part for
which she auditioned, I
overheard, involved having
to pretend to be hypnotised.

"I didn't think anything of it
at the time and then I saw the
trailer for the hilarious new
Philip Schofield fronted show,
in which 'contestants' are
supposedly hypnotised..."

It was a little odd that someone who was told to turn into James Brown, did a mighty good impression of him. The hypnotist would have to know the person could do it before he asked him to. I wouldn't doubt that there could be some hypnotism involved, but we wouldn't know who is pretending unless skewers were forced through the skin of their arms

But I saw Phil on the One Show in the week and he clearly said that if it was staged he would not have hosted the show so thats good enough for me.
Mind you I also believed Yvette Fielding when she said Derek Acora was a genuine medium on Most Haunted.

Oh have I got you lot wrong. OK so I'm passed my prime and I do know these sort of hypnotizing progs are old hat, but honestly just laughed all the way through. Must be my sense of humour.

Saw a small part of the prog and at first felt sorry for the participants as it looked like everyone was laughing at them and they did not get the gag. Thought they were being exploited at first then I just thought what a load of tosh.

However, this is the sort of thing that weekend telly has descended to, It makes Ant & Dec's Saturday Takeaway look erudite.
