Brighton & Hove Albion women's defender Vicky Ashton-Jones hopes the side can use the momentum from Thursday’s cup final win over Chichester City going into today’s crucial league match away at Portsmouth today, kick-off 2pm.

Ashton-Jones played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over the Lillywhites in the Sussex Challenge Cup Final and believes the team will be buoyant going into a massive top-of-the-table clash with Pompey at Privett Park. She told seagulls.co.uk, “Our main focus now is the league, and cup wins give you a massive confidence boost. We’ve not had a great run of games recently so a midweek game, regardless whether it’s a cup final or any match, will give us good momentum to take into the weekend.
“We move to Sunday being just as important, if not more so, than the Chichester game, with our ambitions of trying to win the league. It was a great positive for the girls to win on Thursday and now they’re really excited.
“It is a massive game; there’s no other way of putting it. We’ve got to go out and we have to win that game because a draw is not enough.
“You look at the run-ins ourselves, Portsmouth and Cardiff have and it could go down to the wire. There are some big games coming up and we’ve got Cardiff in the next few weeks as well; these two games are our biggest ones of the season and they could dictate how well we do.
“We’re now focused on Sunday and will do what we can to win that game; it’s make or break from that point onwards.”

The defender is now working her way back to full fitness after spending a total of 16 months out with an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury and explained how good it felt to be playing in a cup final on Thursday.“I’m still getting back into the swing of things post-injury; there were a few hairy moments but there always are playing at centre-half.
“It was nice to get on the ball again and try to play our own game. The pitch was difficult on Thursday night; it was firm but quite bobbly.
“It was important to get on the ball and play it nice and short like James [Marrs] wants us to do. I enjoyed the game.”
