Considering going- anyone been before? Recommendations?

Looks like a really small town- is it worth stopping at Sheffield on the way to find a decent pub?

Rotherham as a town is hideous, not somewhere I'd want to spend any time in.

Town is a bit of a tip, but it's close enough to Sheffield. Haven't looked at trains yet- can you go straight to Rotherham or does it require a stop in Sheffield anyway?

New ground to tick off, is my main motivation. That, and hopefully to see us wipe the smile off Steve Evans' fat sweaty face, after the Amex fiasco under Sami.

Rotherham is quite a large town, which is very spread out. There are some areas which are hideous, but there are also areas which are beautiful. The town centre is very run down, because all the regeneration has happened in Sheffield.
It's 2.5 hours from Kings Cross but I've always gone by car.

Rotherham is a bit of dump but I've always found the locals to be pretty welcoming and friendly, I've enjoyed my previous trips there.

As for trains, change at Doncaster, well I am anyway. Just over two hours from Kings Cross, so not too bad a trip.

Looking forward to the new ground too.

Standing in the way of control
Rov has some ok-ish pubs. Some of the villages round there - Killimarsh and so on - aren't bad if you can be bothered to research. But even if you're driving you're probably best off stopping at Sheff and getting the rattler to Rov, there are loads of good pubs to eat and drink in around Sheff station and the hill.

(Dusts off same old message) if anyone fancies giving a couple of idiots a lift home in return for petrol...:bounce::cool::flameboun:tantrum::bhasign::blush:

Rotherham's a dump.

You've got the choice of St Pancras - Sheffield, or Kings Cross - Doncaster. Given Doncaster is also a bit of a dive, I'd without doubt opt to drink in Sheffield before. Only a 20 minute train from there.

There's a line from Donny but Sheffield is much closer.

The town centre is very run down, because all the regeneration has happened in Sheffield.
Meadowhall (trains from Sheffield to Rotherham usually stop there) has taken much of the town centre trade. Building the Parkgate Shopping Centre so far out of town didn't help, either. In contrast, Mansfield's two largest retail parks are both adjacent to the town centre.

Thanks for all the above. Literally the first time I have started a thread on NSC without being absolutely slated by someone!

I'll be in Skegness for the weekend so thinking of going from there but the train takes 3 hours

If you're driving and want to stop off in Sheffield then take the Park & Ride on the tram network, which extends right out to the Halfway terminus on the Derbyshire border, just 3 miles from J30 of the M1. It's cheap too: 'Family £6.50 available Sat&Sun (up to 2 adults and 2 children)' Presumably that includes Bank Hols. That should take you to the Meadowhall interchange, which is a 5 or 6 minute train ride to Rotherham. Only downer is that the return fare is a steep £2.90.

Err.. no it's not. Here's one example from your threads. It's really annoying when people use the word literally inappropriately. What word are you going to use when you really, really literally have something happen?

I bought shares in "actually" and "virtually" just before they went out of common usage, literally.
