In September 1979, Brighton & Hove Albion arrested a run of three consecutive defeats to record their first-ever victory in the First Division. The opponents? Bolton Wanderers. In January 1980, the Seagulls completed the home and away double over the Trotters. Here’s one of Peter Ward’s two goals that underlined the gulf in class between the two sides.

With the 1979/80 season going into meltdown for Bolton, Scottish midfielder, Neil McCab left the relegation-bound side in February for Brighton in a £230,000 transfer. In true comic book-style, Scoop Magazine took the opportunity to run a photo story of the deal.

By the 1990s, Wanderers were back on the up, while it was Albion’s turn to suffer in the league. Nevertheless, Kurt Nogan’s glorious solo goal stole the Seagulls a late, unexpected winner in 1992/93.
When it comes to captains, few were more influential than Brian Bromley. He was a driving force in the Brighton midfield in the second half of the famous 1971/72 promotion season. He started his career as a 16-year-old apprentice at Burnden Park. Sadly, he passed away in March 2012.
Bromley replaced another ex-Trotter, John Napier, as skipper during that 1971/72 campaign. Northern Ireland international, Napier, had gone from Lancashire to Sussex in an Albion club record £25,000 deal in August 1967. He was even featured in a poster in Jimmy Hill’s Football Weekly.
Incidentally, if you like this shirt design, a replica version is available from the club shop or online.
