Albion will be in their best league position for almost five months when they take on Bolton on Saturday.
The Seagulls moved into 18th spot with their 2-0 win over Leeds tonight.
The result edged them above Fulham and Bolton, who they visit next time out.
Albion were last that far up the table at kick-off at Watford on October 3, when a subsequent 1-1 draw dropped them down to 19th.
They go above Bolton tonight after Neil Lennon's men were edged out 1-0 at high-flying Middlesbrough.

Wanderers are on the slide after losing three in a row but Liam Feeney should have earned a precious point late on at the Riverside.Feeney headed a great chance wide from six yards as he sought to cancel out Albert Adomah's goal for Boro.
Albion also overhaul Fulham after they were thumped 3-0 at suddenly red hot Wolves.
Rotherham followed Saturday's 5-0 defeat at Molineux by losing 3-0 at Watford tonight as points totals in the bottom four remained unchanged.
That leaves Albion six points and 18 goals clear of 22nd-placed Millwall - and looking up as they travel to the North West.
