Third Division Brighton & Hove Albion caused an upset in the League Cup in September 1969 by defeating Birmingham City 2-0 with goals from Alan Gilliver and Kit Napier.The convincing victory was discussed in Soccer Star magazine.
At the end of the season, Albion boss Freddie Goodwin left for St Andrews, taking Scottish international left back Willie Bell and junior team coach George Dalton with him. A potted history of Bell’s playing career in the 1960s can be found here.Bell went on to become the Blues’ manager for two seasons when Goodwin was dismissed in September 1975.
When the sides clashed at the Goldstone in September 1980, it was honours even in the First Division. Neil McNab and Mark Lawrenson scored for Alan Mullery’s Seagulls, while Alan Curbishley and Keith Bertschin replied for the visitors. Future Albion striker Frank Worthington played upfront for the Blues, and weighed in with 16 league goals that season. Even so, it was another future Seagull, Alan Curbishley, who grabbed the winner at St Andrews later on in the season. You can see a photo from the game here.

In the 1981/82 campaign, Albion lost 1-0 at St Andrews while sporting a rare white Adidas kit. Quite why it was worn instead of the standard yellow away strip is a mystery.
The flamboyant Worthington was a Brighton player by the time of 1984/85. However, it was Steve Jacobs and Steve Penney who got on the scoresheet when the Seagulls defeated the Blues 2-0 in October 1984 at the Goldstone.
Incidentally, ‘Worthy’ scored the goal for Chris Cattlin’s promotion chasers in the return fixture in March 1985, but the Blues replied through Robert Hopkins. Shortly after that match, striker Andy Kennedy broke into the Birmingham City first team. He played 56 times for Brighton from 1992 to 1994. Below is a compilation of his Seagulls goals.
Other notable club connections include Mick Ferguson, Dennis Mortimer, Kevin Bremner. Then there is Stuart Storer who was a Blues apprentice, but only played a handful of games before joining Everton in March 1987. Eight years later, he joined Liam Brady’s Brighton side and scored in a terrific 3-3 draw at St Andrews a month later. But the award for the best goal of the match must surely go to Stuart Munday for a spectacular overhead kick.
