Defender Amy Taylor says Brighton & Hove Albion women’s team will not change their mentality heading into today’s Sussex Challenge Cup semi-final against Hassocks.

Albion are still in contention to win trophies on three fronts - with the team also through to the Premier League Cup quarter finals while currently sitting second in the Premier League Southern Division table - but Taylor insists the side won’t be taking their foot of the gas despite being heavily tipped to progress to the final.

She told seagulls.co.uk, “You can’t go into any game thinking that you are the favourites and you have to approach it in exactly the same way.

“It is important to know your roles and exactly what you’re doing. You could end up playing in a different position alongside players that are not usually in the team, but you still have to be professional about it regardless of the opposition.“It’s just a case of approaching the game in exactly the same manner as if we were playing Cardiff, Coventry or anyone like that.”

“It would be great to win the game and give ourselves a chance of winning a trophy as a reward for our efforts throughout the season.”

Taylor also believes that lessons can be learned from Albion’s previous match in the competition against Wivelsfield Green where, despite securing a 9-2 victory, the Seagulls were caught out by the hosts’ quick start and were 1-0 down inside the opening five minutes.

The defender was one of three experienced first-teamers in a side mostly comprised of development squad players that day and admits there is added responsibility on her shoulders being a more senior figure.

“Obviously Wivelsfield came at us fairly early on and went 1-0 up, but our professionalism came through and hopefully it will again.

“In a way you do have to set an example, but when the younger girls or the development squad players step up to the first team, they instantly know what’s required from them.“In a way there was a little bit of pressure on the players that stayed in the first team to pull the younger players through the game.

“You still have to play your normal game and hope that those less experienced players follow the examples you set.”
Today’s game is being played at Culver Road, Lancing, and kicks-off at 2pm. There is free entry to all Albion season tickets holders on production of their card, otherwise admission is priced at £3 for adults.
