Albion put back-to-back league defeats behind them to earn a goalless draw at Cardiff City which keeps them outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Third-bottom Millwall’s 1-0 win at Birmingham has moved them on to level points with the Seagulls, who were good value for their point.
It was a dogged performance from Chris Hughton’s side in a match of few chances.
Albion have now taken as many points away from home as they have at the Amex.
Hughton made three changes from the defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, handing full debuts to Beram Kayal and Leon Best at the expense of Danny Holla and Chris O’Grady while Jake Forster-Caskey came in for the injured Solly March.
In a pretty dull first half it took 17 minutes for either side to fashion a chance of any note, Cardiff centre-back Sean Morrison meeting Peter Whittingham’s corner with a diving header which went wide of the target.
Albion saw plenty of the ball in the first half and were comfortable defensively without really posing a threat themselves.
Boos rang out from the home fans at half-time and Cardiff’s former Albion boss Russell Slade responded by throwing on recently signed striker Eoin Doyle for midfielder Stuart O’Keefe at the break.
Twelve minutes into the second half the Seagulls at last stretched the Cardiff goalkeeper, David Marshall tipping Joao Teixeira’s 25-yard free-kick over the bar for a corner.
A minute later Inigo Calderon’s low cross caused a mad scramble in the Cardiff six-yard box but a trio of Albion players could not force the ball home.
Hughton threw on O’Grady and Kazenga LuaLua to pep up the attack and Lewis Dunk headed a decent chance wide from Teixeira’s free-kick on 70 minutes.
Cardiff had a great chance to break the deadlock with ten minutes remaining, Aron Gunnarsson powerfully heading Whittingham’s corner over the crossbar from a good position.
Moments later there was another scare for the hosts as Craig Noone delivered a cross from the left which Kenwyne Jones headed wastefully wide.
