Colin Calderwood has joined Brighton & Hove Albion as assistant manager to Chris Hughton, and the duo have a long history together.

Calderwood and Hughton were both at Tottenham between 1993 and 1999, with Calderwood still in his playing days while Hughton was on the coaching staff.

It would take ten years for the two to be at the same club again when Calderwood was appointed first-team coach at Newcastle United, eventually becoming Hughton’s assistant as the club won promotion back to the Premier League. However Calderwood left in 2010 to take the manager’s job at Hibernian.

Calderwood left Hibs in November 2011 which led to him and Hughton being reunited. Hughton had taken the reins at Birmingham City in June that year and swiftly moved to appoint the former Tottenham player as his assistant for the second time after he left the Edinburgh club, having failed in his attempt to secure the Scot’s service in the summer.

After one season successful season at St Andrews, when the club made the Championship play-offs, the duo moved to Premier League Norwich City, guiding the Canaries to an 11th place finish in their first season. The pair left Carrow Road in April 2014 with the club lying in 17th place.

Hughton and Calderwood have an impressive track record together having won one promotion to the top flight, reached the Championship play-offs and achieved a mid-table finish in the Premier League.

Calderwood’s own record as a manager is equally as impressive despite the disappointing spell at Hibernian in 2010. In his first foray into management the former centre-back led Northampton Town into the League Two play-offs two seasons in a row, eventually winning automatic promotion in 2006.

The Scot’s success at Northampton led to Nottingham Forest appointing him as manager that summer, and once again the former defender led a side into the play-offs, this time being edged out by Yeovil Town 5-4 in the semi-finals, a game current Albion coach Nathan Jones played in.

The following season Calderwood led a late charge into the automatic promotion places and Forest secured promotion back to the Championship, but the Scot left the club in December 2008, joining Hughton at Newcastle a month later.

As a player Calderwood had a distinguished career, tasting most of his success with Swindon Town in the mid-eighties and early nineties. The defender won one title and three play-offs with the Robins as they rose up into the Premier League.

His success at Swindon earned him a move to Tottenham Hotspur in 1993, leaving the Robins after over 350 appearances for the club. Calderwood made over 150 appearances over six years at White Hart Lane, before joining Aston Villa in 1999.

After one year at Villa Park the centre back moved on to Nottingham Forest for a brief spell at the City Ground, plus a short-term loan at neighbours Notts County, however a broken leg in 2001 ended his career at the age of 36.

Calderwood finished his playing time with over 700 professional appearances to his name and represented Scotland at both Euro 1996 and the 1998 World Cup. He made 36 appearances for his country, scoring one goal.*
