Brighton & Hove Albion take on Arsenal in a mouth-watering FA Cup fourth round tie for the second time in three years on Sunday.The two sides have met 14 times in total, most recently in an FA Cup tie at the Amex two years ago, when a strike each from Ashley Barnes and Leo Ulloa was not enough to stop the Seagulls being narrowly defeated 3-2.The result was Arsenal’s 10th victory in this fixture compared to two wins for Albion, while two matches have ended all square.
The Seagulls locked horns with the Gunners for the very first time back in January 1935, as the Gunners recorded a 2-0 victory in an FA Cup third round tie on the south cost.
The two teams did not meet again for over 44 years until the blue-and-white-stripes took their place in the top flight for the first time in 1979.

A goal from Leo Ulloa on his Albion debut and a strike from Ashley Barnes was enough to prevent Gus Poyet’s side being defeated by Arsenal in a highly-entertaining cup tie.Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal the lead in the 16th minute after Lukas Podolski created space for himself on the edge of the area and fed the Frenchman, who curled the ball past Casper Ankergren. Albion were not deterred by the setback and Barnes levelled the just past the half-hour mark, as the forward beat Wojciech Szczesny to the ball from a David Lopez cross and nodded home. Giroud regained Arsenal’s lead in the 56th minute after reacting quickly to Abou Diaby’s ball across the box before firing a shot past Ankergren from six yards out. The Seagulls wiped out Arsenal’s lead again just six minutes later, when the Gunners defence failed to deal with a Barnes into the box and Ulloa’s diving header had the Amex rocking again. But the Premier League side secured a safe passage into the fifth round when Theo Walcott saw his effort deflect off Adam El-Abd to beat Ankergren with just five minutes remaining.

George Graham’s Arsenal side recorded a 2-1 win in this closely-contested cup tie against a Third Division Albion side.The Gunners took the lead through Kevin Richardson in the first half before Garry Nelson equalised for the blue-and-white stripes just before half-time. The score remained at 1-1 after had Albion spurned a number of chances, and Perry Groves made the Seagulls pay when he drilled home for the winner just 12 minutes from time. The attendance of 26,467 was the largest attendance at the Goldstone since Albion’s run to the FA Cup final in 1983.

Albion recorded back-to-back league victories over Arsenal following a 2-1 win the previous April. Starting the season with two defeats a draw, a Gerry Ryan goal after 31 minutes was enough to secure a memorable victory. Michael Robinson scored in the reverse fixture at Highbury the following February but Albion were beaten 3-1 on that occasion.The season was best left forgotten from a league perspective, as the Seagulls finished bottom of the top flight and subsequently relegated, but Jimmy Melia's side made it to the FA Cup final losing 4-0 to Manchester United in a replay.*
