I live two miles from the Eastbourne DGH...when I had to go into hospital they sent me 15 miles to the Conquest in Hastings...7 and half times the distance...amubulance off call for40 mins.
My sister who lives 2 miles from the Conquest, when she went in ...you've guessed it...to the DGH Eastbourne...again another ambulance off call 40 mins....it wasn't broke before why fix it....to keep the suits in jobs?:(

...or because the Hospitals have specialist staff and you were both sent to the most appropriate hospital for the condition??? maybe? That would be a radical idea.

Maybe, just maybe, the A&E at DGH when you were being taken was full? Which is why you were taken to Conquest, and visa versa.

Yeah there are LOADS of reasons why people may be diverted, or sent, to not necessarily their closest hospital.

If your wife is having a baby what would you prefer, a trip to another hospital with a maternity unit or having the child born with the help of a stroke specialist ???

Seems reasonable...but if I was sent to the Conquest because the AE at the DGH was full...why was my sister sent to the DGH from Hastings?

Why move a Matenity unit from Eastbourne to Hastings...don't they get emergency and early births in Eastbourne now....after all,we are talking about minutes save lives.

id prefer the maternity unit at the nearer hospital was still consultant led. they closed that part recently, apparently because the consultants are preferring to be based at Conquest. now i dont know, but i find it difficult to believe there are either more consultants living in the Hastings area or that its a more attractive part of the world for them. eitherway, the consequence is that there is no full maternity provision between Brighton, Tunbridge Wells and Hastings. look at a map and wonder how they thought that a good idea.

I believe some units are midwife led and others are consultant led. Perhaps the argument should be that there are consultants at both but that would mean more taxes to pay for it and we all know how some don't like the idea of higher taxes!

Isn't it better though to have one very good department than two not so good because there isn't the money to have two very good departments.

Paramedics are probably the best trained people second to midwives so deal with emergency/early births during the trip over anyway.

How about two hospitals with large catchment areas and poor transport links between them having stand alone maternity units?
The ridiculous penny pinching around these two hospitals is going to lead to serious repercussions on the back of spurious claims of having specialist units "In the right place"
If politicians of all colours had spent our treasure responsibly over the previous decades this would be one area that would not need to be culled.

And it would give people a choice as well, we chose Eastbourne (21 years ago today incidentally) over Hastings

Speaking to staff at the Conquest I got the impression from them that they are not happy with more workload being put on them by the movement of Eastbourne patients being transferred to the Conquest...to some of you it might be the right thing to specialise at each hospital...but it worked very well before the change...but why change a 10 min journey to a 40 min one...that is two ambulances off the road/callout for an hour...it just seems that the cost of fuel, two men per ambulance negates any gain of of specialist units being moved.
The only specialist unit that works for me is the Renal unit in RSCH which I attend on a regular basis for over 20 years now.(When I first went there the renal unit was just four Nissan huts,Sir Trafford (later to become Lord) was my specialist.)..the highest example of caring by the nurses ever...now although the renal unit is much the same,at hospitals you are just a number and almost have to apologize for breaking up the nurses from their chat around their desk.
I also attend Brighton General twice a year.

is the correct answer
Stephen LLOYD has been harping on about thia since we lived here (3 years+) and nothing has been done about it (this is why I think he will unfortunately lose his seat to UKIP)
if anyone thinks that this government is going to make things easier they are living in cloud cuckoo land, the DGH will effectivly become a geriatric hospital(having said that I have been in there a few times and it is a very good hospital) its the suits again killing it off.

It's the road between the two that is the problem; If it were dual carriageway most of the way it would be a 15 minute journey but the nature of the road means that during peak times it can take an hour to get from the DGH to the Conquest.
I think the consultant thing is a red herring, I know someone who used to work at the DGH and the trust was offering permanent contracts at the conquest and temporary ones at the DGH pending the review; in those circumstances, they were always going to get better calibre applicants for the Conquest.

Neither here nor there
Eastbourne once had, and deserves to have, a thriving hospital with a fully functioning maternity unit and specialist services that go well beyond the care of the elderly.

The DGH is being deliberately run down to become a cottage hospital, which is an appalling state of affairs given its huge catchment area and the breadth of services it was once able to offer.

I know several people who work there (nursing as well as management) and to say they feel demoralised and let down is an understatement.
