If that upset you, what did you make of Brentford's fans singing along to Hey Jude about 1 second off the pace? It was bizarre, they were off every time and unless the away end is in a different time zone to the ESU, they were having a shocker there!

Maybe this is all to do with the speed of sound: if you're in the East Stand, the sound of the West Stand clapping will reach your ears with a small time lag. That will make you think that either you are out of time, in which case you'll modify your clapping, or that other people are out of time. This effect is clearest if you're in the North Stand and the opposition score and it seems that they are a bit slow on the uptake.

If more than 100 fans out of 19,000 bothered to learn the words the clapping would follow in time, as might the singing.

It's quite astonishing to stand among thousands of people who, just a few bars into the tune, have completely detached themselves from the SBTS playout and chosen instead to clap at a different speed altogether - along with their neighbours. A truly bizarre massed-behaviour phenomenon.. Slap-Happy Clapping, possibly?

Why does this happen? Is the music too quiet? Are Albion supporters' brains simply incapable of synchronising their hands with loud auditory input?

The best remedy of all is for all our fans to forget about all that feeble, brain-dead clapping, learn the sodding words... and sing, FFS!!

But we all know that will never happen.

Or maybe just stick with GOSBTS as an instrumental that gets played when the teams come out? Then do the 'going up to win the unspecified cup' thing during the game? Just a thought.

The words are going up on the screen I believe as this was one of the points to come out of the meeting pre Christmas.

Complete with karaoke-style bouncing ball?

I'd imagine so, it worked for Derby in the play off semi last season. I didn't realise they did it but apparently they did, made for large numbers joining in and helped create a pretty good atmosphere before kick off.

Maybe they're not bothered about clapping in time? Just because you do, doesn't mean others do.

Quite right I wouldn't even have given it a thought until I started learning Guitar and how to keep time, Maybe Dan's a drummer ;-) as has been said though pretty irrelevant and forgotten about well before I got on the bus home.

Littlehampton,Wick actually
So boring and mundane, the old goldstone days were better, soon as the opening of the time comes on,the teams come out the tunnel onto field of play, now it's all the modern day bollocks of forming a line, shaking hand shit.
